Apophysis is a sophisticated freeware Windows program for designing Flame Fractals and IFS fractals. It was developed by Mark Townsend. I recommend that you join the Apophysis mailing list where you will have access to the latest beta version of the programme. The beta versions are constantly being upgraded and improved and the flames can be saved as jpgs to your hard drive. Many hours of enjoyment are to be had with this fantastic programme.

www.apophysis.org/list.html When using Apophysis it may be a good idea to sign up for the mailing list. You can ask any questions or just learn from other peoples' questions and answers. Also any announcements about the programme are made here. Just be aware that this list can get very busy, resulting in many emails to your inbox.

Fractal Explorer - What a great freeware programme. I would recommend using FE if you are just starting out making fractals. An excellent, easy to follow tutorial is available for beginners.

Dust Fractals - Thomas Middelkoop is the developer of this interesting freeware programme that generates fascinating fractals using clouds of points. The link will take you to his home page. Then click on "Dust Fractals" in the menu. The download is only 561kb.

Amazing Seattle Fractals - Are you a beginner and need a well written and easy to understand tutorial that will get you started with fractals? Doug Harrington has actually written four such tutorials. Three dealing with the freeware Tierazon (which is a great programme to get started on) and one for a fascinating programme called Xeno Dream. Make sure to explore the rest of Doug's website because he has done an amazing job putting together some wonderful fractal resources.

KnotWorker - Are you fascinated by Celtic Knots? Well I am and I was very excited to have discovered this terrific programme by David Hall of Gold Cup Software.

  • Quickly draw knotwork designs without any previous experience
  • Use the 60 KnotStyles supplied with KnotWorker to give character to your knots - or create your own!
  • Edit the flow of knots using the Breakline Editor
  • Arrange your designs on a page using drag and drop
  • Add image effects, including colour phase and outline
  • Quickly change the colour of a knot, rotate, flip, and control layer position
  • Save your design in the Windows Bitmap format for use in your favourite wordprocessor, DTP program or graphics editor
  • Save your design in the native KWD format for editing later
  • Tutorials teach you how to draw knots and how to create your own KnotStyles using the KnotStyle Editor

I found KnotWorker to be very intuitive and easy to use. You'll be making beautiful celtic knot designs in no time. It's a lot of fun and I just love it!

KnotWorker has a free trial so you can try before you buy. The cost to unlock the programme is US$10.00. This is such excellent value for money, so please consider donating a bit extra as a bonus for the developer.
